Arthritis affects millions of Americans, but many common beliefs about the condition simply aren’t true. After nearly 20 years each as physical therapists, we’ve seen how understanding arthritis can help people stay active, manage discomfort, and maintain independence.

Let’s separate fact from fiction.

MYTH #1: Arthritis is just a normal part of aging.

FACT: Although arthritis becomes more common with age, it isn’t inevitable. And having arthritis doesn’t mean you have to give up the activities you enjoy.

MYTH #2: Exercise makes arthritis worse.

FACT: Appropriate exercise is one of the most effective ways to manage arthritis symptoms. Movement can reduce pain, improve mobility, and strengthen the muscles that support your joints.

Our advice: Start small, build gradually, and choose activities that feel manageable.

MYTH #3: A bad X-ray means you’ll have bad pain.

FACT: The severity of arthritis on an X-ray doesn’t always match someone’s pain or limitations. Some people have significant joint changes with minimal discomfort.

Remember: An X-ray doesn’t determine what you’re capable of doing.

MYTH #4: Walking wears out arthritic knees.

FACT: Walking is generally considered a joint-friendly activity. Swimming, cycling, and other low-impact exercises can also help maintain strength and mobility.

Even 5–10 minutes of movement at a time can be beneficial!

MYTH #5: Stretching is the best exercise for arthritis.

FACT: Stretching helps, but strengthening is just as important. Strong muscles help support joints, improve stability, and make everyday activities easier.

MYTH #6: Arthritis eventually means joint replacement surgery.

FACT: Many people manage arthritis successfully without surgery. Exercise, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, and other treatments can help manage symptoms and maintain function.
