Our Families Experience with Parkinson’s and Home Care

Family photo of our grandmother, whose experience with Parkinson’s inspired our understanding of home care

Our grandmother had Parkinson’s disease, and as her disease progressed, our family began facing a challenge that so many families quietly find themselves navigating.

We wanted to be there for her and help with everything she needed. But there was also real life. Family members were working full-time. Kids were in school. There were jobs, appointments, responsibilities, and households to manage—all while trying to make sure someone we loved was safe, cared for, and never felt alone.

Eventually, our grandmother needed a caregiver.

That was our family’s first experience with home care, and it gave us an understanding that has stayed with us ever since.

Because when someone you love has Parkinson’s, needing help doesn’t mean you don’t want to care for them yourself. Sometimes there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to be their daughter, son, granddaughter, spouse, employee, parent—and caregiver—all at once.

Years later, after years of working as Physical Therapists and now with American Angels Home Care, we find ourselves talking with families facing those same challenges.

When someone tells us, *“We’re trying to do it ourselves, but…”* we understand. We know how hard it can be to balance caring for someone you love with everything else life asks of you.

And now, we’re grateful to be in a position where we can be there to help other families through it. ❤️

American Angels Home Care provides non-medical home care to older adults and families throughout the Lehigh Valley, including Allentown, Bethlehem, Whitehall, Emmaus, and surrounding communities
